TO: Fayette Campus students
SUBJECT: President’s Communication to Fayette Campus Students – Updated COVID-19 Guidance
We hope each of you were able to enjoy your time with family and friends during this past holiday season. As the start of Session 3 fast approaches, we want to best ensure a safe and healthful return to classes at Fayette Campus. In doing so, we ask that you review the UIU Care Plan and the following updated CDC guidelines for quarantine and isolation.
Students are reminded that if they have symptoms associated with COVID or believe they have been exposed to immediately contact a health provider and the UIU Care Team at [email protected]. If you test positive or if your temperature is over 100.4°F or if you answer “yes” to any of the questions on the Symptoms Checklist (see page 10 of the UIU Care Plan), you will be asked to stay in your home or residence hall room, refrain from attending in-seat classes or other activities, self-monitor your symptoms. It is the student’s responsibility to contact class instructors if quarantine or isolation is necessary in order to make arrangements for coursework.
People who have tested positive for COVID-19 should isolate for 5 days and if they are asymptomatic or their symptoms are resolving (without fever for 24 hours), follow that by 5 days of wearing a mask when around others to minimize the risk of infecting people they encounter.
For unvaccinated people or those more than 6 months out from their second Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech dose (or more than 2 months after the J&J vaccine) and not yet boosted, the CDC now recommends quarantine for 5 days followed by strict mask use for an additional 5 days. Alternatively, if a 5-day quarantine is not feasible, it is imperative that an exposed person wear a well-fitting mask at all times when around others for 10 days after exposure.
Individuals who have received their booster shot do not need to quarantine following an exposure, but should wear a mask for 10 days after the exposure. For all those exposed, best practice also includes a test at day 5 after exposure. If symptoms occur, individuals should immediately quarantine until a negative test confirms symptoms are not attributable to COVID-19.
A member of the UIU Care Team is assigned to students in quarantine and isolation to provide them with support and assistance. That individual will be the student’s go-to contact for any questions or concerns.
While we do not require a COVID-19 vaccination, the vaccines and boosters have been tested for safety and are proven to be effective in recognizing and fighting the virus. If you have not yet received a vaccine or booster, they are available right here in Fayette at Scott Pharmacy https://www.scottrx.com/. Otherwise, please contact your physician, pharmacist or local public health agency.
You are also reminded that the Recreation Center at Fayette Campus has been designated a Test Iowa at-home COVID-19 test kit pick-up site. The free test kits are available during the Recreation Center’s regular hours. Students may also request a test kit at https://www.testiowa.com/en or be tested at Scott Pharmacy.
